Toxic Tobacco Thinkpiece™

for Low Instrument and Multimedia, 2023 - 6”

Toxic Tobacco Thinkpiece™ is about cigarettes, capitalism, the unbearable weight of living under it, and grappling with making art with (or without) value. This piece blends voiceover from old cigarette advertisements with defunct drum machine samples to create an oversaturated track that’s desperate for attention. Always flashy, this piece is meant to be a critique of the tobacco industry, their willful deceit and poisoning of the American public, and the intersection of capitalism, tobacco, and masculinity. Are any of these samples cleared? No, they’re all in the public domain, and even if they weren’t, isn’t there precedent for willfully deceiving the American legal system in the name of profit?
