What Should I Listen To?

I’m slightly biased.

But I think you should listen to my music.

And I’ll tell you why:

Watch

For Solo Piano and Multi-Media

performed by Clare Longendyke

Why I love it: because it’s about paying attention, making connections, and seeing things differently. It’s made up of a little bit of everything that I’m interested in.
Why you’ll love it: Clare just absolutely shreds on this piece! The interplay between the multimedia and performer is so much fun to watch (get it?)

Approximated Memories

For Soprano and Percussion

performed by KITA Duo

Why I love it: because there’s a nostalgia to this piece that you just can’t place. It’s familiar and otherworldly at the same time. It’s simple, it’s pretty, and so much more.
Why you’ll love it: Felicia Chen’s voice is absolutely mesmerizing, and when paired with the sounds in the percussion, something just clicks.

We Can Learn Me Together

For Violin, Viola, and Piano

performed by Sonic Apricity and Clare Longendyke

Why I love it: because this piece is based on a poem my wife wrote about vulnerability and love, and discovering how things work - and the medium of the score reflects that.
Why you’ll love it: it’s just pretty. I don’t often write just straight up pretty music, but the sensitivity and creativity of the performers interpreting the poetry while improvising is so compelling.

Your New Favorite Streaming Service

For Quartet, Audience, and Interactive Lighting

performed by Nyla Hardy, Charlie Burrell, Xavier Motin, and Braxton Hall

Why I love it: because this is one of the first pieces I’ve done with interactive lighting. I love what that extra dimension can bring to a chaotic piece like this.
Why you’ll love it: who doesn’t love flashing lights? And maybe you’ll be able to pick up on the pattern in the lights!

Playing With Shadows

For Solo Percussion and Multimedia

performed by me!

Why I love it: because this piece is about sharing stories, not just from the ones you hear in the piece about my life, but about each audience member’s stories.
Why you’ll love it: because it looks and sounds super cool. If you like spoken word, this piece is built on spoken word stories from my life!

Still Life

For Harp and Erhu

performed by the PhoeNX Ensemble; Patty Chan and Sanya Eng

Why I love it: because the score is literally just poetry and images that the ensemble improvises with, and it makes the duo work together to come up with something unique.
Why you’ll love it: these instruments are just so cool! The sonic combination of harp and erhu is such a unique sound, and their improvisations are filled with amazing energy and sensitivity!

In Conversation

For Chamber Orchestra and Fixed Media

performed by Black House New Music

Why I love it: every single musician is creating this giant Katamari Damacy-style ball of sound.
Why you’ll love it: because how many times do you get to hear contrabass recorder, electric guitar, and radio interviews with an orchestra?

Familiar Patterns

For Chamber Orchestra, SATB Choir, and SATB Soloists

performed as part of the UGA Requiem Project

Why I love it: because this piece captures a lot of the things I am interested in, while still being a piece that celebrates our shared experiences.
Why you’ll love it: you get to hear stories from these musicians lives, told by them. Paired with the hymn at the end, it is an incredibly compelling take on the pandemic.
