“Tapestry” for solo speaking marimbist

Commissioned by Anthony DeMartinis

“Tapestry” was commissioned through a consortium of musicians organized and led by percussionist Anthony DeMartinis, who I met at the Yarn/Wire Summer Institute in the summer of 2017. His Tuba and Percussion group, BrassTaps commissioned from me a piece, “I’m not yet sure what this will become” and then after that process Anthony commissioned me for this solo marimba work. He wanted something tonal and accessible; which is where I feel comfortable in my writing. Being a percussionist myself, I’ve never written a solo marimba work – the medium scares me since it’s such a monument of the pedagogy. How do you write something tonal and accessible but yet new for the marimba while still maintaining my own aesthetic and sense of style without becoming derivative or cliched?
