Lines and Spaces
for Brass Quartet and Electronics, 2016, revised 2018 - 11”
Horn in F, Trombone, Euphonium, and Tuba
The texture of this piece is inspired by the minimalist movements, and the textures they created with their use of thirds. There is no programmatic element to this piece, but as with every piece, there is a little bit of the composer’s own personal narrative embedded into the fibers of the music. This piece was written for my undergraduate composition recital at Hofstra in the Spring of 2017. I was struggling to write a piece for brass, so I started writing about the crossroads I found myself in life. I was about to graduate college, with no certain future ahead of me. I hadn’t figured out graduate schools yet, and my personal and romantic lives were questionable at best. As such, I personally felt this large, overwhelming pressure that a drastic change was going to occur in my life. And as an emotional response to that feeling, Lines and Spaces was written. It is in amid uncertain things, and there are very strict rules at play, but yet there is still room for beauty and pain within the lines and spaces.
