Kaleidoscope

a Musical Game for Strings, 2019 (rev. 2021) - open duration

I love thinking about the way performers “see” music that is meant to be performed; how does the way the music looks influence the way performers approach it?

Are there visual aspects of a score that inform how the music should be played, outside of the graphical syntax of musical notation? As such, the score for this piece is a circle with musical materials placed on the perimeter, with a rainbow gradient looming behind the instructions (to represent the eponymous toy). A variety of motives, textures, and improvisatory ideas come into and out of focus as the performers revolve their way around the “musical game.”

“Kaleidoscope” is then less a composed piece, but more a musical structure that you can play.
