Hemispheres

for two antiphonal soprano saxes, 2019 - 8’

commissioned by Curtis Allen Gay

One of the main ideas for Hemispheres was to have both saxophones feel like they’re acting as an echo of each other, until at a certain point the two echoes converge into one point. A central aspect of this commission was to utilize multiphonics, overtone cycling, and other extended techniques in a way that attempts to feel natural. By asking both players to be separated in the performance space, what I’m really asking is for the performers to connect in a way that is beyond the typical chamber music connection. In order to align the interwoven rhythmic passages, subtle timbral moments, and precise vertical and horizontal simultaneities, both performers must be able to connect and communicate across an extended space.
