Collocation is a term in linguistics that refers to words or phrases that appear together with an unusually high frequency. This also includes words that elucidate a new meaning when paired together: “strong tea” has a different meaning than “powerful tea,” even if both words are synonymous. The societal and historical use and application of the connotations that those words carry convey a newly understood meaning when paired together. In “Collocation,” I try to create new relationships with different musical materials to show how bizarre and comforting it is to create meaning when the materials are extracted and combined in a new way.
