The idea for this piece is to play with what I find graceful: stock film, trees, traffic, baroque music, improvisation, etc. Each particular type of material in this piece deals with the idea of movement in multiple ways. I try to make connections between the materials by asking questions like: “How does a tree move, and can a cellist move like tree? Are there any similarities between street traffic and double-stop polyphony? Is asking the cellist to get up and move with their instrument any different than making them play written music?”
The ideas of movement and musical materials throughout this piece also move freely, that is, there is no larger schema to the logic of the piece than what is on the page. The overall idea of the piece is to play with the idea of motion.
